Is the Order of Links Important for SEO?

A good question many website owners have at the back of their minds is whether or not the first link in your webpage will affect your page rankings or the effectiveness of your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts. Is deciding what the first link in your page is a factor in SEO at all or not? In the visitor’s perspective, it kind of is the latter—your first link isn’t as important as your content or overall link relevancy, it’d seem.

Is Your First Link a Factor in SEO?

As far as the experts are concerned, the answer to the above question is, “Not really.” It sounds like a commonsensical question that’s oftentimes overlooked by SEO professionals at large, but then again there must be a good reason for them to ignore it. There’s no need to modify your Javascript or CSS in order to show the link you believe is the most crucial or SEO-worthy.

It’s really not that important, or at least not as important as building your collection of internal links or external links (backlinks). In the overall scheme of things, your first link is but a drop in the bucket or a mere tree in an entire forest. It’s much more important for SEO to focus on building a good and solid internal links library or have a collection of highly relevant and potentially beneficial external links in order to gain a favorable page ranking from all the popular search engines out there.

How Google Deals with Website Links

If you have a thousand links on hand, the first link won’t matter much in the big picture, so to speak. You won’t get any special benefits, and Google itself has a tendency to parse a page and decide (through its unique, ever-evolving algorithm and a site’s “high quality” content) which of the links are most relevant. As long as the link is there and a person can find and click it, the Google bot can do the same and provide you the page ranking you deserve.

Google will be the one that’ll try to find your most important (read: relevant) links for you. On the other hand, placement is vital if there’s a significant link you want your visitors to immediately find, but that’s more of a design issue than an SEO one in light of how Google parses links. How links affect your page ranking is more about quality, not quantity or immediate visibility on the first page (though that can be a factor… just not a particularly SEO-worthy one).

Same Destination Links and Different Anchor Text

As for links with similar destinations, the question would be: Is the first link more important than the second link in terms of anchor text? In regards of same link destinations with differing anchor text, does the first one gain priority over the second one? A few people have tested this issue (and this is something anyone with a website can test for themselves), and the consensus seems to be that it remains a non-factor.

There are those who believe that relevant links are only searched for by the search engine in certain areas (e.g., article body and resource box), so that may be the reason why “first links” remain mostly a non-factor in the first place: SEO and web promotion experts tend to focus more on keeping the website on-topic with relevant internal links and backlinks in predetermined areas of the website. SEO success is not an issue of clicking on the nearest available link; it’s the overall structure and relevance of all the links that’s important.

Panda 2.2 and How It Affects SEO

Panda 2.2 is already amidst us, with SEO experts and webmasters already adjusting their content to suite this new algorithm change for Google’s search engine functionality. Relatively long ago, Google announced the launching of a new, major algorithm unlike any the web has ever seen. It was specifically designed to reduce the rankings of “low-quality sites” or sites that are tangentially correlated to a search word yet offers little in terms of content or relevancy otherwise.

Panda’s History

Panda is different from any other algorithm update because it’s by no means subtle in its presence. Even though Google claims only 11.8% of U.S. queries were affected by the Panda update, many unsuspecting online businesses that depended on the old way of bumping their websites up the search engine rankings were devastated by the major update. For example, over 80% of organic traffic losses were tallied, and each impact has been chronicled extensively by the SEO community.

In April, a second version of Panda was created for all English sites, and this one followed quite a lot of user feedback as its search signal. From there, on May, Panda 2.1 emerged. Understandably, quite a lot of SEO-dependent businesses are concerned that while the update will prove to be beneficial in the long run, many others may not survive the drastic SEO blow that Panda will be bringing in the immediate future.

As characteristic of Google, they remain silent about Panda and its impact, plus they offered little to no advice to sites who were caught by this new algorithmic nightmare, aside from the removal of low quality content and releasing 23 questions that serve as guides for those who want to understand what exactly does Google consider as low quality content, which should then be translated as higher rankings on search results.

• Address Usability Issues: The less usable your website is or the harder it is to navigate, the more likely Google will mark your websites with a lower search engine result ranking. Fix those bugs and issues post-haste.

• Create High-Quality Content: You should deliver what your website advertises, and even your mode of delivery should be topnotch. Practice what you preach, and don’t be sparse with your material.

• Get Well-Updated SEO Marketers: If your website depends on search engine optimization, it might be a good idea to get experts from professional SEO Company who are prepared to face this newest upheaval in Google’s search engine algorithm.

How to Increase Your Search Engine Rankings

When talking about search engine rankings many people ask themselves questions like; how many keywords should I put in my anchor text? What is the keyword density that I should have on the page? Should I use short copy or should I use long copy? Can I use flash or not? How many keywords should I put in the body of the text? How do I put this all together so that my site will be highly relevant for Google etc…

A general statement to answer the above questions is that "magic numbers do not exist." The most important thing you must understand as a search engine optimization expert is that algorithms change. Just when you think you understand what is going to make you number one for a keyword phrase in a search engine, something could easily change, and you might have to spend months or even years trying to figure the new algorithm.

It is better not to try to reverse engineer the algorithm, do something much easier instead…observe your top competitors. All you need to do is to understand what elements your competitors are using to make them rank in the top positions.

Two main elements to getting top search engines rankings are:

- Quantity, quality, and relevance of inbound links pointing to your site

- Fresh, relevant, quality content (needs to be added frequently)

LINKS, LINKS, LINKS

The first thing to observe from your competitor’s sites is their inbound links. This means the number of sites that have a link pointing to their website. You can easily measure it by going to Google and typing: link:http://www.yourcompetitorssite.com. However do not only do this on Google because they don’t show all actual links pointing to a site. Yahoo tend to show a lot more of the back links to any given website using the so called Yahoo Site Explorer which you can find here http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com.

Part of the observation should be not only what the links say, but where the links come from. Think about what the category is that those links come from. If you start to see a recurring pattern, you should start actively searching for links coming from that category or niche of websites.

Some marketers use special software for robotic content creation. They generate thousands of pages with links pointing to their sites. This practice can be very dangerous, as Google can penalize unnatural linking or violations of their guidelines and especially if the links are from the same network (don’t do it). And what happens is that those links do not look natural. One day one site may have 50 links and the following day have 2000 links, which all say the same thing and come from the same IP address Network of websites.

If you understand how to observe, this will never happen to you. You will learn how to look at your competitors, and observe how they are getting linked to.

FRESH QUALITY CONTENT

The second thing to observe is how much fresh content the top sites have. Search engines love quality relevant content that is added and updated frequently. You will probably notice that the top sites in your niche have many articles and other quality content, and are continuously adding new content to their sites. Content writing has been a very busy occupation for web copy writers as most successful online businesses engage in it.

People that surf the web are usually searching for information, so content is the "fuel" of internet traffic. If you want to attract many potential customers to your site, then you need to make sure that you provide enough content which is relevant to their interests. Updating it frequently with more quality content will keep visitors coming back to your website over and over again.

Are You a Chump or a Trump? (1/2)

Donald Trump is a real estate mogul. The man knows how to get what he wants, knows how to make a sale, and definitely knows what’s important when it comes to converting a sale. In your business, it would be best if you had this mentality and a drive to succeed like this man has. If you’re not worried about website sales conversion, you’re not really into your business. Make them want to find out why you’re so special, and convince them that you’re a worthy investment for them to make.

5 Important Facts about Getting Top Placements in the Search Engines – And What to Avoid

Never hire a SEO company that guarantees a number one placement in Google. There are lots of “come and go companies” promising to get your site number one in Google.
